Just because the MTV Movie Awards are over, it doesn’t mean we’re done talking about ALL the fash-happenings that took place on the red carpet. We already dished on the fashion trends (metallics! Peplums!) and pulled out the top looks, but what about those nails? After taking a closer look at the stars’ tips, we noticed one thing that all these ladies had in common—they matched their manis PERFECTLY to their ensembles. Bravo! First up: Janelle Monae sported cool black and white nail art to emulate her even cooler menswear-inspired black suit and white button-up look. (Psst: We love that she added a pop of pink on her lips and eyes for some color in her ensemble.) Even her ring took on the black and white trend!

Amber Rose went ALL out for her minty-fresh look. She paired long, light green stiletto nails with sparkles, pearls and pendants to match her lace overlay super springy dress. She finished the look with pale pink peep-toe pumps that coordinated with her pout. She definitely thought through this entire head-to-toe look, and for that, we have to give her major props!

Emma Watson wore a sporty marbled purple and blue Brood peplum dress, but the most awesome part is how she matched both her eyes AND nails to her ensemble. She added a swipe of the lovely lavender color on her lids, and for her tips, she opted for a high-shine dark navy blue. Emma always has the best beauty game because she even get its right down to the details.

We’re sort of obsessed with Kristen Stewart’s no-nonsense approach to fashion (I mean, she switched into sneakers mid-show!), but we love that she decided to match her metallic Guishem dress to her nails for a totally pulled-together look. (Also, that killer cage ring costs nearly $6,000, NBD.)

Victoria Justice went for a fiercely fresh approach her Movie Awards ensemble by sporting a white and yellow color-blocked Erin Fetherston frock with bright white nails. We love this summery manicure on short nails because it looks clean AND chic. (Don’t think we didn’t notice it on her toes too. ;) )

Here’s the pattern I made. You can follow the same one or make up your own. Keep in mind, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Once you lay down a lot of little x’s, it tends to come together. To see the polish colors I used, click the links I’ve added in the steps below.

  1. Start with a base color. I chose black so that the colors would pop. White would also be a great fit for spring!
  2. Follow the pattern I illustrated above. Start with GOLD x’s.
  3. Next one WHITE x to help the center 「pop」 .
  4. LIGHT PINK for the inner petals.
  5. DARK PINK for the outer petals.
  6. DARK GREEN for the darker leaves.
  7. Next, you’ll carry the dark green petals over to the middle finger.
  8. Add some additional LIGHT/BRIGHT GREEN x’s for the lighter leaves.
  9. Same colors will be used on the pinky.
  10. Add a quick drying topcoat once your x’s have dried!

MANICURE MUSE: Mulberry Fall 』13

When I think of Mulberry, cartoon pears on graphic tees and neapolitan flavored dresses immediately come to mind, so it came as a bit of a surprise to see what Emma Hill had up her sleeve for Fall 』13. Sure, there was the (absolutely necessary) checker-clad poodle who trotted down the runway, but the collection as a whole was was a little more grown-up than the Mulberry brand I like. It was dark and moody, with an injection of muddied pale pink. Check and plaid was literally on just about every garment, but I didn’t hate it. In fact, my favorite look from the show was this sequined shift dress that melted into plaid styled over cropped trousers.

To emulate this look, I used Jacqueline by Zoya, Mercury Miasma by Topshop, and Sitting Pretty by Ginger+Liz.

To get these Ladyfingers:

1. Start with a full ivory nail

2. Paint the lower half of your nail with metallic blue

3. Using a nail art brush, paint short vertical pale pink lines in the center of the metallic portion of your nail

4. Repeat with horizontal lines

5. Using a dotter tool or tooth pick, make metallic blue dots going upwards on your nail

6. [OPTIONAL] Using a black nail art pen, draw thin lines along one side of the pink lines to create dimension

7. Top it off with top coat!
